Stooshe’s Alex Buggs studied a marketing degree at the University of Portsmouth, graduating in 2011. She took some time out to tell UP for Uni how her life has changed since being in the band.
What’s it like?
Lucky for us we don’t really have any disagreements and get on well. We are basically sisters who know each other inside out. Being in the girl band is the best thing I’ve ever done.
What do you love most and like least about what you do?
I love the fact that I’m living my dream and doing it with my two best friends, but I miss my family a lot.
How have you got used to being in the public eye?
As there are three of us, it’s a lot easier as we are all going through the same experience. But it’s been fun and positive, so, at the moment, we love it.
What was it like making your album London with the Lights On?
It was a lot of hard work and long hours. But when you enjoy writing, singing – and the three of us bounce off each other – it just works. The final product feels like such an achievement. It’s a good feeling.
Do you prefer singing on stage, in the studio or in the bath?
I love singing in all those places obviously, but my favourite would have to be on stage, as you can completely let loose and put your heart into it. It’s such a good time. Singing in the bath is a different type of let loose – I think I sound bad when singing my heart out in there!
What was the best thing about university?
The best thing about uni was meeting new people. I was able to grow up and become independent and have made life-long friends.
Why did you study marketing at university (and not something related to music)?
I always loved music, but was always so scared of singing in front of people and getting judged. For A-level I did business and was good at it, so I went with marketing. I thought in the future I’d do
public relations (PR) or organising events, so still something creative.
Do your marketing skills come in useful?
They do sometimes when we are asked for marketing ideas when we have a single coming out. I try to throw in a few ideas.
If you weren’t in Stooshe, what would you be doing now?
I would hopefully have a job in PR organising big music and fashion events.
Who would you most like to meet and why?
Beyonce! She’s absolutely amazing and a big inspiration.
What are the most important things in life?
To me, it’s keeping grounded and keeping your family close.
What’s your advice to young people who dream of following in your footsteps?
It’s possible for anyone. You just have to know your craft, perfect it and don’t change for anyone. Just believe in yourself!
Marketing = promoting and selling products or services.
Public Relations (PR) = used in marketing to gain positive media coverage for your company such as
newspaper articles, TV interviews, or on social media.
Event management = marketing tool used by companies of all sizes. From product launches to press
conferences, companies create promotional events to help them communicate with customers.
